Cona Elder Law Attorney Paul Hyl Gets Fit to ‘Fight for Charity’

October 2009

Says It’s Good for the Heart in More Ways than One

Every year, estate planning attorney Paul Hyl, 34, sets a challenging fitness goal for himself.  Last year, he ran a half marathon, and this year he is training three times a week to fight in the LI Fight For Charity on November 23rd at The Long Island Hilton in Melville.

It’s already working for the 5’7” attorney who marvels at losing 12 pounds in six weeks.  “With three rounds of choreographed boxing for two hours, it’s amazing that this could be such a great cardio workout,” Hyl explains.  “Fighting for charity is good for the heart in more ways than one.”

Representing Cona Elder Law (Cona Elder Law), a leading L.I. elder law and estate planning law firm in Melville, at the 7th annual “Long Island Fight for Charity,” Cona Elder Law has pledged $5,000 to enter Hyl in the event.  Letters to colleagues and clients as well as flyers, mailings and postings on social media sites should increase awareness and interest.

Donning the appellation, “The Probator,” Hyl will be up against Rahsheen Slaughter “The Breakthrough Specialist” who is a personal trainer.   Even though Hyl feels that his opponent is probably in better physical shape, he is excited about the match.

At one of Long Island’s premier and most exciting fundraising events attended by over 1,200 people, the goal for this year is to exceed the $140,000 raised in 2008.
Sixteen business people will participate in the Fight including accountants, bankers, insurance executives and financial planners who will go head to head in the ring.   Following months of intensive training with the charity coach Tony Fortunato of Eye of the Tiger Boxing, Hyl and the other boxers are learning the fundamentals of boxing -- proper stance, balance, footwork, punch combos, sparing and more.

Going from burning buildings and cars as a volunteer firefighter in Farmingville, LI during high school and college to his current arena - the boxing ring, Hyl is no stranger to getting involved in community outreach activities even when he might place himself at some risk.  A certified EMT, Hyl has also worked with the volunteer ambulance and has participated in Cona Elder Law sponsored charitable endeavors including Midnight Run for the homeless, bicycling for the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation and various community events for seniors and residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities.   His next mission is to volunteer for “Habitat for Humanity” and “Toys for Tots”.

Charities that will benefit from Hyl’s fight this year are: Long Island Community Chest,
The Genesis School, Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE).

“This is Cona Elder Law’s second year putting up a staff member for The Long Island Fight for Charity,” says Jennifer B. Cona, Cona Elder Law partner and director of the elder law and estate planning firm.  “Paul is graciously ‘taking the hit’ for Long Islanders in need,” says Ms. Cona.  “We are really excited to support this great event and to raise money for these worthy charities.  We’re proud to show our dedication by putting a staff member in the ring again this year.”
