Jennifer Cona, Esq. and Melissa Negrin-Wiener, Esq. to present at 17th Annual NAMC Work/Life Conference

On Friday, November 2, 2012, Jennifer Cona, Esq. and Melissa Negrin Wiener, Esq., Cona Elder Law partners, will join the prestigious featured speakers at the 17th Annual NAMC Work/Life Conference.  Cona and Negrin-Wiener will lead the session on:

Aging Parents:  What Working Caregivers Need to Know.

The Conference is from 8:30 am - 4:00 pm at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.  Registration fees are $110 for NAMC members, $185 for non-members.  Registration may be made on-line at  www.NAMCWorkplace.org or by calling Ellen Kramer at 516.939.6667 ext. 104.

Each day, approximately 9,000 people turn age 65.  As the population ages, more and more people need hands on care.  The adult children are expected to provide this care even though they are working and struggling to take care of their own families, hold onto their jobs and make ends meet.

As Elder Law attorneys, we meet with individuals everyday who have either quit their jobs, taken a leave of absence or simply used their vacation time to be on-hand to care for their aging parents.  Whether it be taking their parents to doctor appointments, physically providing hands on assistance or making telephone calls to coordinate services, working caregivers are risking their job security, their own health and their financial security to provide care for aging parents.

There are many services and benefits available to help working caregivers with their aging parents.  Local senior centers, adult day care programs, companion services, home health aides, assisted living facilities and nursing homes are just a few options available to help ease the burden on the adult child caregiver.  While these are all viable solutions, the next question that arises is how will families pay for these services?  Many individuals are not familiar with the government benefits available such as Medicare, Medicaid and Veterans Benefits.

This session will address the issue of balancing work and caregiving by providing practical options to help the caregiver obtain peace of mind so they can be productive during their work day.  We will also address legal issues, asset protection planning and funding the various care options.
