Cona Elder Law Awards Amelia Larkin, East Setauket, As LI Middle School Winner of Veterans Red Write and Blue Essay Contest

Amelia Larkin, a 13 year old East Setauket  resident and student at Murphy Junior High School, recently won the annual Red Write and Blue Veterans essay contest sponsored by Cona Elder Law, an elder law firm in Melville.

Receiving nearly 500 entries from 30 LI school districts on the topics "My Military Hero" and “What America Means to Me”, Cona Elder Law awarded Amelia a $ 100 gift card and certificate during their Veterans celebration at the LI State Veterans Home in Stony Brook.

"We selected Amelia's essay because of how skillfully she expressed why her uncle is her hero and how he has inspired her to help others and be a hero herself one day," says Melissa Negrin-Wiener, Esq., partner at Cona Elder Law.

As Amelia wrote, "he has done things only people with bravery can do, such as being in S.E.R.E. School, capturing terrorists and invading Grenada.”  She stated that “it's really cool how he has traveled to so many places including Israel, Turkey, France, Egypt, Greece and Italy.”  And most amazing to her, “he has even eaten an armadillo.”

After interviewing her uncle, she realized how important it is to be “good and helpful to people.”

The Salute to Veterans, Red Write and Blue Essay Contest gives young people the opportunity to learn more about their country and the freedoms and liberties they enjoy every day.  This type of intergenerational program gives our youth the chance to learn from their heroes, the very people who made this country what it is today.
