Cona Elder Law Creates the Buddy Carle Memorial Music Scholarship

In memory of Carle D. Porter, a/k/a "Buddy Carle", a/k/a "Butch", Cona Elder Law and Jennifer Cona are proud to announce the creation of a music scholarship fund.  The scholarship will be awarded each year to a college student studying music at a college or university in the Rochester area.  The fund will particularly seek out aspiring jazz musicians.

A little history about Carle Porter:  Buddy Carle and his friends formed the "Buddy Carle Quartet" in the 1950s in Rochester, New York.  The band practiced in Carle's living room at 139 Holloway Road in Rochester, where the only recording of the band was made.  The Buddy Carle Quartet played around the Rochester area until the 1990s.  It was at this time that Carle turned his talents toward the "New Horizons Band" and participated in the Jazz Fantasy Camp at the prestigious Eastman School of Music.  Carle was the oldest member of the "New Horizons Band".  At the time, Carle was in his 90s and suffered from macular degeneration.  However, this didn't stop him in the least.  Instead, it is rumored that Carle studied his music at home until he had it well-rehearsed and memorized, thereby obviating the need to actually see the music when playing with the band.

In 2007, Carle moved to Cape Elizabeth, Maine.  There, he played for the gang at his residence at Village Crossings and, at the age of 91, played with Stephen Bither (on piano) at the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church.

Carle loved the Big Band era of music and jazz improvisation.  Carle's music will live on through his single recording and his memory will live on through the Buddy Carle Memorial Music Scholarship Fund.
