The IRS has warned taxpayers to be alert during tax season to phone and e-mail scams. Scammers are ever-more aggressive and creative in stealing your money and your personal information. Identity theft is on the rise and thousands of people have lost millions of dollars in recent years to these taxpayer scams.
Phone calls from the IRS: Scammers pose as IRS agents to steal money and/or your personal information.
One scam involves a phone call from an alleged IRS agent who advises that you have back taxes due and asks you for an immediate payment or turnover of bank account information in order to avoid penalties and interest. These calls are shocking and intimidating and you may feel threatened to resolve this issue through immediate payment.
This is a scam. The IRS does not call taxpayers.
E-Mail Scam: Bogus e-mails are being sent to consumers that look and sound very official with all the hallmarks of authority from the IRS. Never click on a link from a source you do not know, no matter how official it looks.
The IRS always and only communicates via regular mail. Any unexpected phone call or e-mail is a scam.
